Greek Island Escape

One of the first things a local told us when we arrived on Skiáthos was that they live by “island time.” It’s a way of life where there’s no rush, no stress—just a relaxed vibe that prioritises wellbeing over productivity. It’s the kind of mindset that feels foreign to Australians and Americans, where the culture often leans toward “living to work” rather than working to live.

When life feels overwhelming or stressful, there’s no better escape than a small Greek island. Skiáthos and Skópelos, while less talked about than Santorini, offer the same vibrant beauty but with a much more peaceful energy. These islands aren’t about a party scene; they’re about unwinding, reconnecting, embracing island living.

Skiáthos’s beaches have crystal-clear water you can easily spend hours floating in. I highly recommend Koukounaries Beach for a morning espresso and pure relaxation or Lalaria Beach, which is accessible only by boat and features smooth white pebbles and gorgeous turquoise water.

Driving around the island is extremely scenic so it’s worth hiring a car. The roads take you through olive groves and pine forests, leading to hidden coves and stunning viewpoints.

The locals in Skiáthos are some of the most generous and welcoming people I’ve ever encountered. They’re always happy to share their favourite beach spots, offer recommendations, or simply chat about life on the island. Their warmth and hospitality really elevated the experience.

Food on both Skiáthos and Skópelos is so fresh, and the portions are very generous. The seafood is incredible—picture grilled octopus drizzled with olive oil and lemon or a whole sea bass paired with a classic Greek salad featuring the ripest tomatoes and creamy feta. Most days, we were indulging in so many of these incredible dishes, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over how good everything tasted.

In Skiáthos, my favorite dining spot was La Cucina di Maria, a vibrant Italian restaurant that we returned to four times because it was just that good. Their fresh pasta was some of the best I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something considering my time in Italy. Every dish was flavourful and vibrant—a must-visit.

Skópelos, on the other hand, is quieter and slower-paced island, perfect for starting your mornings with a latte and baklava at Kochillis, a beautiful bakery on the waterfront. Their baklava was perfectly flaky and soaked in honey, and the coffee was smooth and rich. Kochillis also sells high-end Greek goods and local produce, so you’ll often find it packed with locals.

For dinner in Skópelos’, Olivo was my absolute favorite. Their risotto was unbelievably creamy, and every meal was rich and indulgent filled with local ingredients and Mediterranean herbs, (Skópelos is known for being one of the most lushest green islands).

In the Summer months, the sky doesn’t begin to darken until nearly 10 pm, which is ideal for relaxing evenings on a terrace with friends, or sitting on a boat with a glass of Assyrtiko, sun soaking

Small greek islands are the perfect retreat to help you unwind, recharge, and reconnect with life’s simplest enjoyments. Skiáthos and Skópelos islands are the perfect destinations and each offer relaxation and the kind of detox that leaves you feeling refreshed and lighter.
